Strange New Worlds S3 — practical first, virtual where it expands the world
Practical First. Virtual Where It Expands the World.
A mature production method in which practical builds, actors, graphics, virtual production and visual effects are chosen shot by shot.

This production predates antiqueRobots. It is listed as production experience carried by the people named above, not as work produced by the company.
The challenge
A third season expected to widen the show's world, on the same episodic reality — with sets the cast actually has to operate, creature environments to invent, and a large space engagement to stage.
Virtual production compresses the deadline rather than the workload. As Zimmerman has described it, the team is building something for the day they shoot, which demands more urgency and more interaction between departments.
The approach
Practical came first where actors touch the world. Engineering was largely built practically so the cast — Martin Quinn's Scotty among them — could genuinely interact with it, with motion graphics played in live by first assistant art director for motion graphics Timothy Peel, so the season was not planning for a large monitor-comp pass later.
Where the world had to expand beyond a build, the practical work was extended rather than replaced. Zimmerman has described starting something practically and iterating it into a virtual asset, to the point that no one knows where one begins and the other ends.
The Gorn hive is the clearest example of the hybrid: a virtual production asset with practical pods placed in the foreground for depth.
The process
Environments were being explored before the boards existed. Tatosky has described being able to work in the creative process before storyboards and show filmmakers potential shots and layouts.
When boards did land, previs started immediately — Zimmerman has described beginning previs the minute the team receives the boards from episode 301's director, executive producer and producing director Chris Fisher, for that episode's space battle.
Delivery ran as a supervised programme across an in-house team and outside partners including Ghost VFX, Storm VFX, Crafty Apes, Pixomondo, Zoic Studios, AB VFX and Cause and FX, with the season's work reported by VFX Voice at between 2,000 and 2,500 visual effects shots.
Cinematography stayed the anchor throughout, with Glen Keenan photographing the season.
What it enabled
- Sets the cast could operate for real, with graphics running live rather than deferred to post.
- Creature and ship environments extended beyond what a stage build alone could hold, without abandoning the physical foreground.
- Filmmakers seeing candidate shots and layouts early enough in prep for the choices to still be cheap.
Why it matters to antiqueRobots
The method is not ideological. Practical when practical is best. Virtual when virtual expands the world. Digital when digital solves the shot. That judgement is the job.
It is also where our human-led, AI-assisted position comes from. Tools move faster every year; the value is in filmmakers who know which tool the scene actually needs, and who stay responsible for the taste behind the choice.
Key principles
- If the actor touches it, build it.
- Extend the practical rather than replacing it.
- Start environment exploration before the boards.
- Choose the method per shot; never per department.

A Season 3 Animation Magazine interview with Jason Zimmerman could not be located; Animation Magazine's Zimmerman interview on record concerns Star Trek: Section 31 (March 2025), not Season 3. It is therefore not cited here. No other antiqueRobots leader is named on this case, because no located source names them in Season 3 coverage.
