The Last of Us Shapes a Digital Storm Around Practical Boat Photography

Foundry · Production Workflow

What happened

DNEG compositing supervisor Francesco Dell’Anna describes combining gimbal and water-tank photography with digital water, rain and environments for The Last of Us season-two finale. Nuke geometry, projections and atmospheric cards gave compositors room to shape depth and visibility around the actors. Image: DNEG © 2025 Home Box Office, Inc., via Foundry.

Why it matters

The sequence needed darkness and danger while keeping the action readable. That required creative control over the storm’s layers as well as a match to the practical water.

Antique Robots take

Plan the practical reference and compositing controls together. A shot can be physically plausible yet dramatically unclear; give the team enough separation in the elements to protect the performance.
