Spider-Noir Builds Color and Black-and-White Looks from One Shoot

American Cinematographer · News Article

What happened

Darran Tiernan and Peter Deming photographed Spider-Noir for separate color and black-and-white presentations. Tiernan paired Venice 2 cameras with vintage Canon optics and equipped design, costume and makeup departments with FX3 cameras and monitors so they could test both viewing LUTs during preparation. Why it matters

Two finishes affect choices well before the grade. A costume or set color can separate clearly in color and merge into the background in monochrome.

Antique Robots take

Build both looks into the camera and department tests. Finding conflicts while materials and lighting are still adjustable is more useful than discovering them in the final grade.
