Heated Rivalry Matches LED-Volume Sunlight to a Moving Background

American Cinematographer · News Article

What happened

Cinematographer Jackson Parrell describes creating Heated Rivalry’s closing car scene on an LED-volume stage. The team selected a sunset driving plate and mapped its changing sunlight to an additional LED fixture, reproducing the rhythm of light passing through trees. Other sources supplied sky, edge and interactive light. Image: production photograph via American Cinematographer.

Why it matters

The effect depends on the relationship between the plate and the foreground lighting. A convincing background alone does not make the people and vehicle feel as if they occupy that place.

Antique Robots take

Choose the plate early enough to test its duration, geography and lighting direction. Treat the volume, supplementary fixtures and camera exposure as one cinematography setup.
