China’s Beyond Wukong Pushes AI Production into 40-Minute Prime-Time Television
China Daily Asia · News Article

What happened
Beyond Wukong is a 30-episode fantasy series with roughly 40-minute episodes, produced through Mango TV’s AIGC Innovation Content Center with Bojing Culture and aired in a prime-time Hunan Satellite TV slot. Mango production materials describe a nearly 100-person team using its LumeCreate / Mango Lingchuang platform to build an end-to-end AI workflow covering environments, characters, camera choreography and production management. Reporting says story, character arcs and emotional beats remained shaped by human writers, and the production used human dubbing rather than synthetic voices. Mango TV’s official series page confirms Li Dongshen as director and episode runtimes of more than 40 minutes.
Why it matters
This is no longer a short demo or a festival experiment. A broadcaster pushed an AI-heavy workflow through serialized television production, continuity, delivery and mainstream distribution. Once a show has to hold a prime-time slot, character consistency, scene continuity, editorial discipline and production management become far more meaningful questions than whether a single generated shot looks impressive.
Antique Robots take
The milestone isn’t “AI made a television show.” It’s that a production team got the technology through forty-minute episodes and into a real broadcast schedule. That’s a much harder problem than generating a beautiful shot. Now the questions that matter are the same ones every production faces: does the story work, can characters survive hundreds of cuts without falling apart, can directors make precise notes, and does the workflow hold up under schedule pressure? AI becomes interesting when it survives production — not when it wins a prompt contest.
